Winter Colors 6

This Thursday two King Cakes from Haydel's Bakery in Jefferson, Louisiana, will be delivered to my New England place of work. My colleagues will have various reactions to the icing in the familiar Mardi Gras colors of purple, green and gold. Listen to an NPR segment on these traditional New Orleans treats.

Oh the memories! Have a slice for me, would you?--if I get the baby, I'll figure something out!

Believe it or not, my uncle delivered a King Cake from Haydel's Bakery one day after you made this post. Our cake had a baby AND a dog in it! Having grown up in the New Orleans area, I expected the baby but had never experienced one with a dog, although I read about the REAL krewes having one with a crown to determine who would be king for that year.
Do you rember Mackinzie's doughnuts and other pastries? That was our bakery of choice when I was a child.
Cheers,
William
P.S. Still thinking about your Christmas card. Choice!

Louisiana spawns strong culinary memories in people, doesn't it?

Yes, MacKenzie's coconut cake used to be my mother's choice each year for her own birthday. It was a good choice, I admit in retrospect.
