When I decorated a tree on Christmas Eve, I had no hesitation about the first ornament. It needed to be something I had received from a friend a few hours earlier. That friend understood that "The Nest" would be the theme for Christmas in a new home.

that is a lovely idea viz. having a 'first ornament'
I will try to remember this for next year.
Now a good question -- what are criteria someone might use in selecting a "first ornament"? Emotional resonance? Thematic aptness? Size and color? Length of ownership?
Donals, I think it is all about Emotional resonance... or, if not, of course the practical consideration, to put first what is on the top, or what is low and can be done without chair
Alas, I do not 'do' Christmas tree any more, just admire those of others, this year, my grand daughter put on last the hightest star on top, but then, she begun to finish small toys under the tree, making a toy Christmas tree too
